Twenty-six pails of velvet red beets filled the back of a pickup truck at Lady Flower Gardens — the efforts of a dozen volunteers working this field in northeast Edmonton on Saturday morning. The harvest was held in honour of the beautiful woman seated across the field of greens, Jennie Visser, who turned 90 the previous day. The farmer and mother of six has dedicated much of her life to social activism, so it was fitting the beet haul from farmland that has been in her family for generations was destined for the Edmonton Food Bank.
