In 2011, when Nick and Cristo Crudo opened a charming, tiny Italian café in a faded strip mall near Alberta Avenue, it was for family. Their mother had died, and the brothers wanted to find a way to spend time with their father, Guiseppe — known as Papa Joe — a longtime chef and restaurant owner in Edmonton and in Penticton. Another family restaurant ­— the Crudos owned several over the years — seemed just the thing.
