In the aftermath of the Alberta budget this week, one of the most telling reactions came from Alberta’s post-secondary sector.


But university research is supposed to be about the independent, impartial search for truth. A world-class research university can’t do its research at government direction to achieve state economic goals. When the government meddles, when it tries to pick “winners” and “losers”, it stifles creativity and the sort of free inquiry that actually pays economic and social dividends.
